Things to note

AWS re:Invent was last week and it has followed the rest of the industry into AI hype stuff. Yawn. There’s a new custom Graviton4 CPU that claims more cores and memory bandwidth. There’s also a new Trainium2 machine-learning processor. There’s a new S3 tier, the Express One Zone for data-intensive object storage applications. AWS is just slapping a Now with AI sticker on its existing stuff for the most part as it further complicates its service catalog and paralyses customers with too much choice. AWS’ Q chatbot is going great*..

Broadcom has started the layoffs at VMware. About 2,000 people will get fired early next year, apparently, with 1,267 of them from California. Holiday parties always double as job interviews at this time of year, and VMware people will be extra keen to have that quiet chat. This will be the first of multiple waves, I reckon.

I wrote a sponsored Tech Note for GestaltIT about Commvault news Commvault Cloud thing. CEO Sanjay Mirchandani has been rebuilding the traditional Commvault business to be more like the Metallic SaaS business.
