Sanctions, Robots, and a Happy Line

Australia has sanctioned a Russian national over the October 2022 Medibank data breach. Apparently that’s solved the problem for the millions of people whose data was being hoarded by a company that didn’t notice if someone got into their systems and copied out 200GB of customer data. The OAIC investigation into the breach only started in December of 2022, so I don’t expect a published report before 2026 or so. Medibank’s stock price is higher now than it was just before the breach.

In unrelated news, it was Data Privacy Day on Saturday, 28 January.

Veeam CTO Danny Allen announced on LinkedIn that he has left Veeam. This is a bit sudden. I’ve enjoyed a lot of conversations with Allen over the years, and he always took my feedback about Veeam well, even when it was blunt. I am curious why he’s chosen now to depart.
