Broadcom, Boffins, and Blocking Cookie Banners

Things to note

HPE is going to buy Juniper Networks for USD $13 billion. The consensus from the network nerds I know seems to be that this is about the Mist Systems and Mist AI wireless stuff, which competes with Cisco Meraki and HPE's Aruba Edge. The network nerds don't like Aruba, and they liked Meraki better before Cisco bought them. It's unclear what the plan is for the datacentre networking part of Juniper, though. HPE might take that part of Juniper and put it into Greenlake, which is probably the best outcome for all concerned, but no one seems sure that HPE is smart enough to do that.

Broadcom has moved quickly to reset its relationship with partners, resellers, and customers. It's kicking out most of its cloud service providers. There are also some reports (such as this blog whose providence I haven't verified) that activations of licenses are also paused as Broadcom retools the licensing situation to reflect its change from perpetual to subscription-only. It's pretty messy for everyone who isn't one of the handful of big players Broadcom picks as winners.

A Melbourne travel agency, Inspiring Vacations, lost control of a database of customer data that included people's passports, tickets, itineraries and so on. The breach happened in November 2023, and the most alarming part for me is that it was apparently because of an open AWS S3 bucket. An open S3 bucket? In 2023? Really? The company was founded in 2018, and the S3 feature Block Public Access was added the same year. This is more than a simple mistake.
